How I Dress According to My Mood

Hello Lovely,

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been the person who wears her emotions on her sleeve (sometimes literally). This became even more evident when I discovered wearapy and wanted to make it a real (recognised) form of therapy. Some of you are probably wondering what the hell I’m talking about. A few years ago, Jeannie Mai started using the term “wearapy” to define her psychology of style. Wearapy describes how you can manipulate your mood from the outside-in through style.

In fact, colour and emotion can often be intertwined. For instance, red is a colour of stimulation while blue can have a calming effect. Just like you might tend to grab a pair of black sweatpants when you’re under the weather, wearing a favourite colour can have the reverse effect and uplift your spirits when you need it the most.

Sometimes, even if we don’t feel like it, we need to dress rational, stylish, or sensibly. But if I’m trying to improve my mood, this is what I do to avoid wearing black from top to bottom.

HAPPY

When I’m happy, I don’t necessarily dress in bold colours. Instead I choose comfortable, yet flattering clothes, that still make a bold statement. I’ll take a few risks with my outfits but for the most part, I still play it safe.

CONFIDENT

Feeling confident in a professional setting is a bit harder to gauge. When I’m feeling powerful, it shows in my colour choices. I go for bold pairings, sometimes mixing prints. When I’m feeling confident, I’m in love with my outfit and deep down, I feel like everyone else is too. I take more photos of these outfits because I feel proud of the look.

TIRED

We all feel tired, exhausted, especially in this modern world. Usually, when I feel like this, I go for comfort and accessibility. Because when I’m tired, it’s important that I don’t try to think about it too much.

Why I Chose To Downsize My Wardrobe + How You Can Do It Too

Why I Chose To Downsize My Wardrobe + How You Can Do It Too

Most people have much more clothes than they need or even use and this summer I had enough! I don’t know about you, but what’s inside my wardrobe is nothing short of unnecessary. It’s mostly a mess of clothes that get rarely worn, but saved nonetheless. Because maybe one day I’ll have a hot date to a gala in the Maldives where that l sexy white dress or feathered (and sequined) green dress that’s still hanging up.

I’m guessing that, while you might not have a feathered and sequined green dress like mine, your closet is full of similar stories. So let’s commit right now to sorting through it once and for all. This project can be kind of a doozy, so you can take the weekend if you need to.

My Favourite New Clothing Pieces + The Fall Colour I Can't Stop Wearing

Hello Lovely,

It's hard not to over-state how exciting it is to add new pieces to my wardrobe. I love having options and I love getting compliments on new pieces so I can say, “Thanks, it was only $6”! I'm not someone who's governed by trends, but that’s not to say that there aren't a few styles that come with each season that I get excited to embrace. This year I’m obsessed with Burgundy. There’s something about the colour that I can’t resist and this year, I may have overdosed on it. Check it out!

But that’s not the only colour I’m loving. I’m also loving a rusty orange, which you’ll see in these pieces. I wore the trousers to work and everyone loved them! I also own a pair of orange trousers that were really comfortable and nice for work. I haven’t worn the jacket yet, but I’ll definitely share a photo when I do.

I am really excited about these new pieces. I love how versatile they are. I can wear them with a lot of different colours, and a lot of the pieces easily transition outside of the office. I’m going to have fun mixing and matching, or some days just keeping it monochrome. What are you wearing this Fall? Share your obsessions in the comment section below and let’s chat!

Summer Vacay Style by Zaful

Hello Lovely,

I have big news for you! I recently became an affiliate of the online shop Zaful. You can get great coupons at the end of this post to help you save some money on your next order. Of course the site always has sales which you can't miss. I worked with Zaful before and thanks to them I got really beautiful clothing pieces in my closet. I can't wait to order some new items from Zaful because the clothing is so unique and gorgeous. I'm going to break down each piece: how well it fit, fabric quality and wow factor!

Before my vacation this summer, I was counting down the days until I jetted off! I don't know about you, but a part of my trip planning always includes finding new clothes to wear while on vacation. For my London trip, I waited until I got there because I was really excited to go to stores like Primark, Next and Top Shop. But for this trip, I ordered my clothes in advance and picked them up from my aunt when I got there.

IMG_20180713_131459__01.jpg

In my order, I couldn't decide between two dresses so I ordered both of them but only one (the orange halter dress) fit, so I gave the other one (a black and white slip dress) to my cousin. I wore the orange halter dress in Puerto Rico and I felt like a movie star walking through Old San Juan (even though I can't wear a bra with it). I wore the two piece suit in St. Thomas, but I wasn't able to get a good photo of it until a wine tasting earlier this month. I was really happy to wear my yellow two piece outfit in Houston, but with the heat, I sweat so much, it wasn't a pretty sight after awhile. The fabric wrinkles very easily and is not breathable at all, so I've only wore the halter top since (again I can't wear a bra with this, but I'm not complaining). I wanted to wear my sexy black swimsuit in Houston but we never found time to go to the pool so I wore it at a sorority pool party when I got back home. It's really not flattering on anyone with breasts bigger than a B cup and you will have nipple slippage so invest in nipple covers if you get this.

IMG_20180721_175249.jpg

And don't get me started on how chic the accessories are! Of course I've included photos of me in the outfits to show how they would fit. Just so you know, I ordered a Large in everything because I was afraid it would run small and I have pretty big boobs for my frame. The top on the first dress, definitely could've been bigger, but at least I didn't have any malfunctions. Out of all the clothing pieces, it was definitely my favourite because I love the way it moves, it's totally breathable and I just felt gorgeous in it!

I've also included links to each item in case you want to them:

3 Ways to Wear a Pencil Skirt This Fall

Hello Lovely,

Lately I've been having fun challenging myself to commit to certain colours or themes for the week. Last week we enjoyed cooler weather with a cold front so I was happy to wear longer sleeves and sweaters. I love cold weather because for me it's easier to get warm than it is for me to cool off in hot weather. But let's be honest, Fall and Winter fashion can quickly become frumpy and unappealing. While we hardly get a chance to wear sweaters because it's always so hot, I was determined to prove that Fall fashion can be both functional and fun. So here's 3 ways to wear a pencil skirt this fall:

With a printed top

DSC_0347.jpg

Because it's Fall I didn't want to go too wild and crazy with the print. I kept it neutral by pairing a blush midi pencil skirt with a black and white striped top. By keeping my heels and sweater neutral as well, nothing was too fussy, leaving everything clean and streamlined.

A printed pencil skirt

Then again, there's nothing wrong brightening things up a bit. Using a tribal print pencil skirt as my base, I was able to pair it with a pumpkin coloured blouse and my new favourite coat (only $9 by the way). I accessorised with a colourful piece of African jewellery for fun.

With a cool pair of flats

DSC_0348.jpg

When my kids asked me, "What are those?" I had to explain to them that they are called Oxfords and I bought them in London where a lot of people wear them. I was going for a relaxed look with this one, pairing it with my new striped blouse (a steal at only $5). Seriously guys, fashion does not have to be expensive!

So what do you think about my pairings? I can't wait to share more ways to wear every day items to provide inspiration if you're ever stuck. Has this post motivated you to switch up your look? Share your reactions in the comment section below.

The 5 Pieces I Have My Eye on for Fall

Hello Lovely,

I can't believe Fall is already here! In The Bahamas, the weather never actually changes. It's summer all year round. The lowest we get is about 70 degrees. So it's hard to get excited about Fall fashion. That doesn't mean we can't still find ways to enjoy some of the hottest trends of the season. Fall usually means dark colours, which is a stark contrast to my recent love for all things bright and beautiful. I swear I just joined the unicorn bandwagon only to be saddled with muted tones.

New seasons are the perfect excuse to switch up your wardrobe. I'm not looking to go overboard with new pieces, but there are a few pieces I would love to add to my collection. Some of these items are way too costly so I'll be on the look out for knock offs and cheaper brands!

Wine Coloured Trousers

It's official. The colour of fall is Red. I'd love to get my hands on a pair of wine-coloured trousers like these. I have a wine-coloured skater skirt that I purchased last year and I think a pair of pants would be the perfect addition to my Fall collection.

Faux Fur Heels

Single Sole Feather High Heels.jpg

I'll admit, the feathered slippers I see women wearing absolutely disgusts me! It looks like someone hot glued faux fur on the slippers my brother would wear. There is nothing cute, stylish or sophisticated about it. However, put it on a pair on heels and NOW we're talking! I recently ordered these shoes and they're just as gorgeous in person. Haven't worn 'em yet though. I kind of just want to wear them with a long luxurious bathrobe and pretend to be rich.

Floral Print Boots

Do I think these boots are ugly? Yes. Yes I do. Does that stop me from wanting them? No. No it does not. For years I've wanted floral print combat boots, but never knew where I'd wear them so I never bought it. Now the desire has returned stronger than ever. I just have to keep reminding myself that I recently purchases four new pairs of heels....

Couch Florals

I really can't resist floral print. No matter what form it comes in, florals are here to stay in my books. I already own one floral print maxi dress and recently bought a tiered floral print maxi skirt. I've got floral print pencil skirts and a few floral print shift dresses for work. But one more couldn't hurt? Right?

Summer-to-Fall Essentials That Look Good on Everyone

Hi friends!

It's Wednesday, which means it's Hump Day and I'm feeling particularly humpalicious! I'm not entirely sure what that means, but let's just roll with it shall we?

Last night was the season finale of Pretty Little Liars, and I couldn't be more satisfied! Well at least until about the last 15-30 seconds when they said 5 Years Later. Seriously, my life was finally complete. I've been watching this show from the beginning (however many years that is) and I FINALLY got the answer to who A was, with an ENTIRE backstory that explained EVERYTHING (won't spoil anything) and then they had to hint that the whole thing is pretty much starting up again. I just may have to take up residence in Radley myself after that plot twist.

But the show is over until Winter, which means my weekly fix for all things dramatic and fashionable, or fashionably dramatic or dramatically fashionable (however you want to put it) is on hold. Although summer fashion shows are now coming to an end, signaling the impending chill of fall, don't rush to ditch your summer duds just yet. I'm gonna show you how to transition some of your Summer Essentials into Fall Classics, while avoiding the seasonal mall rush!

1. The Slip Dress

For high-octane glamour with a nonchalant edge, the slip dress is the perfect pick. It's great by itself on a summer day with sandals, but when the weather starts to get a little chilly, adding a cardigan, trench coat, parka or military jacket is the perfect way to transition this traditional summer look into a fall beauty.

2. The Maxi Skirt

For a forever chic look, go all out for the leg lengthening virtues of the maxi skirt. Whether you opt for a sleek column fit or a wafting voluminous shape; rework your maxi with bold prints, sheer mesh finishes and dipped and asymmetric hemlines.

3. Infinity Scarves

Scarves are timeless accessories used throughout the year’s seasons and fall is no exception! Layer up and give your outfit that extra pop with a cute scarf.

4. Kimono Cardigans

It almost never gets cold in the Bahamas. And if it does, it only drops to the 60's. Christmas day is usually a sweltering 80 degrees. Which means some afternoons can still get pretty warm! But if you want the illusion of a fall cardigan while still staying cool, cover up with a light kimono cardigan draped over!

5. Skater Skirts:

Always have a few pretty skater skirts lying around! The thing I love most about skater skirts is how versatile they are. You could dress 'em up with heels and a blazer, or take a more casual (or practical depending on how cold it gets) approach with tights, boots, and a knit cardigan or parka. And the best part about skater skirts? They're stylish all year round!

Which Summer-to-Fall look is your favourite? Sound off on either this page, my Facebook page, or on the Polyvore page. And if you haven't followed me on Polyvore yet, you totally should! It's like cool and stuff. And totally filled with pretty, shiny things. Have I convinced you? Good! See you in next post!

How to Tell Your Friends that They Dress Badly

I firmly believe in wearapy; that being the way we dress has a significant effect not only on how others perceive us, but how we feel about ourselves. The way you dress should be a reflection of who you are. You can also express your mood through your outward appearance. Not everyone dresses the same, and that’s okay. But somewhere along the line, you’ve deemed yourself to be more knowledgeable in fashion and trends, and now you’re looking at your friends, trying to figure out how to save them from a fashion disaster. This could be either a fun or a really sensitive topic when confronting the person. But sometimes you just need to let your friends know that they dress badly. Here’s 5 tips on how you can begin to have that conversation.

1. Let Them Know You Care

This can be a delicate situation to handle. It’s always better to start out with how much you care and appreciate them. Make sure they know that you only want what’s best for them. Maybe you can try having this conversation over a glass of wine or their favourite comfort food. Make sure they’re comfortable before you begin the attack. Don’t make them feel like this is an intervention, even though it basically is.

2. Ask Them Why They Dress that way

Before you go off on what you think is wrong with what they wear, it’s good to get their perspective. Everyone has their reasoning for why they think it’s okay to wear pyjama pants or a satin cap in public at four in the afternoon. You may not agree, but to them it makes sense.  Whatever their reason is, help them get over it or through it. Be a good friend. After finding out why they won’t change, give them a reason to change.

3. Ask Them if They Want to Change

No one likes to have someone else’s views shoved down their throat. Don’t forget, opinions are like private body parts: It’s great to have, but when you start swinging it in someone’s face, no one’s happy. When they do decide to change, make sure you’re there for them and willing to help. Don’t be the friend that nags them to change but doesn’t help. That’s unsupportive and what kind of person does that make you look like?

4. Be Upfront about it

Upfront. Not mean. Sometimes that friend just needs to hear it straight, no lies, no sugar coating. Don’t leave any room for misunderstanding, and let them know you’re being serious. You can start by telling them why you question what they wear. Maybe the slouchy pants and stained t-shirt makes them look a little sloppy. It’s also better if they know that it’s not just you that is bothered by how they dress. Explain how their appearance affects their lives. Is your best friend still single and only has her cats to look forward to on a Friday night? Or maybe that job interview ended before it even began. Bring up past experiences in their life and let them know that the reason why something happened is because they dress badly. This involves explaining what is wrong with their clothes. If the crop top is too small for her body, let her know! Plumber crack is not sexy people! And no one wants to be seen with 18th century school librarian. Not only is she making herself look bad, she’s making you look bad as well because other people are going to say, “She couldn’t tell her friend she looks bad”?

5. Tell Them How They Can Change

Maybe your friend already knows they want to change but has no idea where to begin. Telling someone to change without giving them the tools to do so is a setup for failure. Give them inspiration; whether it’s reruns of ‘What Not to Wear’ or ‘How do I Look’, or making them a board on Pinterest. (And if they don’t know what Pinterest is, there may not be help for them at this point). You can also go the subtle route and just buy the clothes you would want to see them in as a birthday or Christmas present. You can even go the cheap route by just offering to share your closet with them. Explain how fashion works and give them choices. Explain the difference and why one choice is better than the other. Help them find their actual style in a modest and subtle way.

Some of you probably have one person in mind the entire time you’ve been reading this, or maybe that person is you. If you’re having trouble with defining your sense of style, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Some of you may genuinely not care what others think of you and that’s fine. There’s no need to depend on the validation from others to feel special or good about yourselves. But if you find yourself constantly falling on hard times, or feeling like you just can’t catch a break, it’s okay to make a few cosmetic changes, if it means that at the end of the day, YOU are happy with yourself. Because if you’re not putting your best foot forward, you’re only doing yourself a disservice.
