The Feast: Frida Khalo Fashion Showcase - Hit or Miss?

Frida Khalo Post Cover.png

Hello lovely,

This past Thursday, Bahamian fashion designer, Cardell McClam premiered his newest collection inspired by the iconic Frida Khalo. Frida Kahlo de Rivera (Spanish pronunciation:[ˈfɾiða ˈkalo]; born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón; 6 July 1907 – 13 July 1954) was a Mexican artist who painted many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. Inspired by the country's popular culture, she employed a naïve folk art style to explore questions of identity, post-colonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy. In addition to belonging to the post-revolutionary Mexicayotl movement, which sought to define a Mexican identity, Kahlo has been described as a surrealist or magical realist.

Hosted at the Courtyard Marriott, the night began with a cocktail hour hosted by Perez Clarke, who held stimulating discussions with guests about HIV and it's effects on the Bahamian population. Many vendors set up shop, while we were treated to a sensational Bachatta by the Maydi Dancers.

As always with a Cardellicious fashion show, the fashion show began with a provocative video, to set the stage for the story that would unfold on the runway. The video clip was taken from a scene in the movie about Frida Khalo played by Salma Hayek. The video depicted what appeared to be the death of Frida Khalo followed by a tribute, but it went on way too long, with the gist being understood within the first minute.

An artist by the name of Positive Energy took centre stage to deliver a prolific spoken word piece. We saw another seemingly misplaced video before a new artist named Danette performed her studio single, Melanin to the Core. In an effort to raise awareness on the facts about HIV,

Cardell hosted a round table discussion asking tough hitting questions like, “Would you date a person who is HIV positive?” The answer shocked everyone, when epidemiologist, Glenise Johnson said, yes she would, because if a person is taking their medication properly, the antiretrovirals would prevent the infection from passing on to someone else. It gave everyone a lot to think about. We watched one more video with Cardellicious designers Cardell McClam and Christopher explaining the purpose of the new line. I loved that we were going to see pieces meant to be worn in everyday settings that we will soon be able to buy in a boutique. I can’t wait to show you the piece that I fell in love with!

We were told that the colours of the night were Blueberry blue and lemon yellow, but we saw a lot more than that. At first the men’s apparel appeared to be random pieces that didn’t belong together in a collection, because none of them shared a commonality, function or theme, but they were still very nice looks. I didn’t get a Mexican vibe from the clothing, but they do look like pieces men can add to their wardrobe.

The blue suit was my favourite men’s look because I love turbans and fitted suits. I also loved the fuschia combo with the large black belt. I felt they were the strongest looks in terms of visual appeal and marketability. Then came the women’s looks, which really blew me away. Naturally I didn’t LOVE every piece, but this collection really spoke to the theme, and I felt it flowed wonderfully. I’ll save my favourite pieces for last.

Like I said, these looks, looked as though they belonged in the same collection. Bold colours, powerful lines and structures - I was able to see the Frida Khalo influence in these pieces and they were well done. These next two pieces I gave a little nickname: The one on the left is what you would wear to your ex’s funeral, and the one on the right is what you would wear to your ex’s wedding. You know, THAT ex. Am I wrong? Or just petty? You be the judge.

That leaves my favourite looks of the night. Everything about these looks screamed fantastic: the hair, the makeup, the models. I loved these looks because they looked the most ready to wear. That’s pretty much what I look for in fashion. It’s all well and good when a designer makes something couture that belongs on the cover of a magazine, but what happens to it afterwards? If a look transcends from the runway to my closet, I’m sold. The first look is a beautiful beach cover-up that looks luxurious to lounge in. Then there is a simple black tuxedo look that I love (I told you I love a fitted suit). It’s on my bucket list to own a matching fitted suit one day. Then there is a sexy long sleeved dress that screams DATE NIGHT! That’s the piece I want the most!

What did you think of the looks? Share whether you think this collection was a hit or miss in the comment section below. If you missed any or want to see them on the runway, check out my live stream here for a full rundown! On Friday I’ll have the complete breakdown of EVERYONE nominated for an Elevation Award in the 2019 Award Show, so stay tuned for that! Will I be nominated again? Only one way to find out!

My Favourite New Clothing Pieces + The Fall Colour I Can't Stop Wearing

Hello Lovely,

It's hard not to over-state how exciting it is to add new pieces to my wardrobe. I love having options and I love getting compliments on new pieces so I can say, “Thanks, it was only $6”! I'm not someone who's governed by trends, but that’s not to say that there aren't a few styles that come with each season that I get excited to embrace. This year I’m obsessed with Burgundy. There’s something about the colour that I can’t resist and this year, I may have overdosed on it. Check it out!

But that’s not the only colour I’m loving. I’m also loving a rusty orange, which you’ll see in these pieces. I wore the trousers to work and everyone loved them! I also own a pair of orange trousers that were really comfortable and nice for work. I haven’t worn the jacket yet, but I’ll definitely share a photo when I do.

I am really excited about these new pieces. I love how versatile they are. I can wear them with a lot of different colours, and a lot of the pieces easily transition outside of the office. I’m going to have fun mixing and matching, or some days just keeping it monochrome. What are you wearing this Fall? Share your obsessions in the comment section below and let’s chat!

Three Classic Wardrobe Combinations That Always Work

Hello Lovely,

My style is constantly evolving. When I was in high school, I rocked the emo look. When I transferred to college in Miami, I started wearing bright colours and made drastic changes. Because I was still trying to find what worked for me, getting dressed often became a chore. No matter how hard I tried to set clothes out from the night before, I often ended up changing my mind in the morning and doubting myself. I even documented this evolution in a Facebook album. Looking back on some of those outfits often makes me cringe, but I learned a lot from it, which really sped up my getting ready process. Getting dressed is so much easier for me now. I’m far more confident because I know what works for me. So I’m sharing three classic wardrobe combinations that always work.

Short Dress, Long Coat

I don’t get to wear long coats very often, but this past weekend, I wore it when I went out with some friends. While a short dress or skirt, especially one that's form-fitting, can feel too revealing, throwing a knee-length coat, trench, or sweater over it instantly elevates it to something that feels elegant and rich. I’ve even worn it with long skirts and it still had the same effect. I’m partial to a neutral dress with my floral duster but I’ve even done it will all neutrals.

Monochrome

You can’t go wrong by wearing the same colour in various pieces. Although I don’t wear this combination as much, it’s definitely a safe bet! Whether you choose all black, all grey, pink, white, or blue, monochrome always looks good!

Basic Blouse, Statement Skirt

I do this all the time at work! It’s easier and often looks cooler, which is why so many of my outfits use this formula. After selecting a knock-out skirt, I reach for almost any neutral top to go with it, that would have looked far less memorable had I paired it with a simple pair of trousers.

Summer Vacay Style by Zaful

Hello Lovely,

I have big news for you! I recently became an affiliate of the online shop Zaful. You can get great coupons at the end of this post to help you save some money on your next order. Of course the site always has sales which you can't miss. I worked with Zaful before and thanks to them I got really beautiful clothing pieces in my closet. I can't wait to order some new items from Zaful because the clothing is so unique and gorgeous. I'm going to break down each piece: how well it fit, fabric quality and wow factor!

37243093_10214311002142748_3786767631457976320_o-2.jpg

Before my vacation this summer, I was counting down the days until I jetted off! I don't know about you, but a part of my trip planning always includes finding new clothes to wear while on vacation. For my London trip, I waited until I got there because I was really excited to go to stores like Primark, Next and Top Shop. But for this trip, I ordered my clothes in advance and picked them up from my aunt when I got there.

IMG_20180713_131459__01.jpg

In my order, I couldn't decide between two dresses so I ordered both of them but only one (the orange halter dress) fit, so I gave the other one (a black and white slip dress) to my cousin. I wore the orange halter dress in Puerto Rico and I felt like a movie star walking through Old San Juan (even though I can't wear a bra with it). I wore the two piece suit in St. Thomas, but I wasn't able to get a good photo of it until a wine tasting earlier this month. I was really happy to wear my yellow two piece outfit in Houston, but with the heat, I sweat so much, it wasn't a pretty sight after awhile. The fabric wrinkles very easily and is not breathable at all, so I've only wore the halter top since (again I can't wear a bra with this, but I'm not complaining). I wanted to wear my sexy black swimsuit in Houston but we never found time to go to the pool so I wore it at a sorority pool party when I got back home. It's really not flattering on anyone with breasts bigger than a B cup and you will have nipple slippage so invest in nipple covers if you get this.

IMG_20180721_175249.jpg

And don't get me started on how chic the accessories are! Of course I've included photos of me in the outfits to show how they would fit. Just so you know, I ordered a Large in everything because I was afraid it would run small and I have pretty big boobs for my frame. The top on the first dress, definitely could've been bigger, but at least I didn't have any malfunctions. Out of all the clothing pieces, it was definitely my favourite because I love the way it moves, it's totally breathable and I just felt gorgeous in it!

Sail Away Fashion Show Recap

Hello Lovely,

This past Sunday, the remarkable designers, Cardell McClam and Christopher John of Cardellicious collaborated with R.E.A.C.H. Bahamas. R.E.A.C.H to bring The Sailor Boy 2018/2019 Collections. Bahamas is a non-profit organization that aims to provide parents with comprehensive knowledge and tools in all areas of the Autism disorder and other related challenges in the Bahamas.

26169950_1729045253807561_5178753819025738865_n.jpg

The show opened with a sizzling performance by Patrice Murrell, singing her original hit song, "Your Ting." Patrice's confidence translated superbly as she sauntered around the catwalk, getting everyone excited for the show that was about to come. She was followed by the incredible Chase Fernander who rocked everyone with her smooth Hip Hop song entitled, "Repeat". The last musical artist was Rapp Quelle. I've heard of him for years but never had the opportunity to meet him so I loved hearing him live.

DSC_0531.JPG

The show consisted of over 20 dazzling looks! Just like the Cardallicious showcase at Bahamas Fashion Week, the apparel was ready to wear! I loved almost every single piece that graced the runway.

This one was particularly my favourite look. I'm completely obsessed with the duster look right now so I immediately gravitated towards this look! I genuinely would wear this look belted around the waist with a "Cinderella" heel.

I love how this model and the others walked the runway so confidently. I felt compelled to buy the clothes right away! (Not like I need an excuse to shop any way).

Here are some more of my favourite looks.

Areas that I thought could improve were the environmental and runway music, and lighting in the room. Someone kept dimming the lights making it near impossible to get a decent shot of the models. There was a point when the lights were fully up and it was the perfect lighting, however, once they were dimmed, it became a real struggle. Another area for improvement was the direction the models entered and exited the runway. With the media in the back of the room, the entrance of the runway for many models was at the back of the room. This also made it near impossible to get a decent shot of the models as they did not pause long enough in front of us.

But don't worry. I was able to capture the final walk, with Cardell's closing vote of thanks. See the full recap in this video below.

I was so happy to purchase a R.E.A.C.H t-shirt as well as a pin and car decal. I look forward to volunteering with them in any way I can this year. Which look was your favourite of the night? What do you look for in a Fashion Show? Share your reactions in the comment section below!

The 5 Pieces I Have My Eye on for Fall

Hello Lovely,

I can't believe Fall is already here! In The Bahamas, the weather never actually changes. It's summer all year round. The lowest we get is about 70 degrees. So it's hard to get excited about Fall fashion. That doesn't mean we can't still find ways to enjoy some of the hottest trends of the season. Fall usually means dark colours, which is a stark contrast to my recent love for all things bright and beautiful. I swear I just joined the unicorn bandwagon only to be saddled with muted tones.

New seasons are the perfect excuse to switch up your wardrobe. I'm not looking to go overboard with new pieces, but there are a few pieces I would love to add to my collection. Some of these items are way too costly so I'll be on the look out for knock offs and cheaper brands!

Wine Coloured Trousers

It's official. The colour of fall is Red. I'd love to get my hands on a pair of wine-coloured trousers like these. I have a wine-coloured skater skirt that I purchased last year and I think a pair of pants would be the perfect addition to my Fall collection.

Faux Fur Heels

Single Sole Feather High Heels.jpg

I'll admit, the feathered slippers I see women wearing absolutely disgusts me! It looks like someone hot glued faux fur on the slippers my brother would wear. There is nothing cute, stylish or sophisticated about it. However, put it on a pair on heels and NOW we're talking! I recently ordered these shoes and they're just as gorgeous in person. Haven't worn 'em yet though. I kind of just want to wear them with a long luxurious bathrobe and pretend to be rich.

Floral Print Boots

Do I think these boots are ugly? Yes. Yes I do. Does that stop me from wanting them? No. No it does not. For years I've wanted floral print combat boots, but never knew where I'd wear them so I never bought it. Now the desire has returned stronger than ever. I just have to keep reminding myself that I recently purchases four new pairs of heels....

Couch Florals

I really can't resist floral print. No matter what form it comes in, florals are here to stay in my books. I already own one floral print maxi dress and recently bought a tiered floral print maxi skirt. I've got floral print pencil skirts and a few floral print shift dresses for work. But one more couldn't hurt? Right?

My 2017 Bathing Suit Collection

Hello Lovely,

Let's call 2017 the year of the swimsuits! I have acquired more swimsuits this year alone than probably my whole life. I don't know what inspired this suddent urge to own more swimsuits. Maybe it's because I finally like my body. Sure there are still things I would change about my body, but I've found swimsuits that really compliment my body and make me feel less self conscious.

It all started in March when I went to Exuma and bought this gorgeous high-waisted swimmie. Out of all of the bathing suits I got this year, this one cost the most at about $25. As you all know I'm a girl on a budget and I delight in finding entire outfits for less than $50.

So when I found these two swimsuits in Primark in London, I couldn't believe the pricetag! I even got a matching bathin suit for one of my best friends.

In Switzerland, I wasn't expecting to go swimming so I didn't pack anything. Luckily my friend's aunt was able to give me three bathing suits from her younger years. I was surprised to see how flattering European swimsuits can be. I instantly fell in love with them and can't wait to wear the others. I have to add straps to the green one so I'll let you know how that DIY goes.

What does your bathing suit collection look like this year? Does yours change yearly or do you keep what you like? Share your bathing suit collection in the comment section below or on my Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages.
