Question: What Should I Make With These Fabrics?

Hello Lovely,

I should be ashamed to say this, but for years I’ve been hoarding fabric. For a number of reasons I’ve lost my love for sewing. I lacked inspiration (sure there’s plenty of things to make, but did I NEED any of them?), it’s WAAAAAAAY too hot to sew at home most days, I don’t have a proper sewing station, I don’t have a serger to create clean finishes, and most importantly, it became easier and cheaper to just buy clothes. So for years I’ve been moving fabric from one part of the house to the next, throwing away fabric as it got stained. But now that I’m back at my old school, I’m remembering the clothing construction room that has dozens of sewing machines at my disposal and the classroom isn’t so hot. Plus the teacher is really nice and agreed to help me cut out a pattern. But with school closing in only two weeks, I have very limited time to get in there. So I need your help! What should I make with these fabrics for summer?

After I pulled out the fabrics, I very quickly pulled some inspiration that has been floating around my Pinterest boards for some time now. I’ve paired 6 designs with a fabric choice. What do you think?

Summer Grey

I like the idea of using the grey knit fabric to create this look. There’s about 1.5 yards, which is sufficient for a crop top and mini pencil skirt.

Potluck in style

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to wrap a dish in a dish cloth and carry it to a potluck. If I make this I won’t have to do that any more. I want to use the floral fabric. Now I just need a lining fabric.

Salsa flair

As soon as I saw this, I immediately thought about the yellow fabric. It’s a nice and bright stretch knit that would look so cute in this design! I would only have to find money for the pom pom trim. Speaking of pom pom trims…

Can’t resist pom poms

Is it cheesy that I want to use my white fabric to make this white kimono style top? No? Okay!

BTW, I’m probably obsessed with the idea of pom poms for the summer.

Pillowcase Chic

Looking at this dress makes me think about pillowcases, sorry. So that’s why I thought my blue and gold brocade fabric would go nice for this. It’s a broadcloth which I don’t like using for clothing, so we’ll see. I’ll probably end up changing my mind on this one.

I think my white and black stretch knit would be cute for this. It won’t give off the A-line flair like the photo, but it should be soft and comfy. I can use a black pom pom trim.

So what do you think? Which idea is your favourite, and which do you think I should toss?So far I’ve cut and serged the grey fabric for the mini pencil skirt. Going into the clothing construction room is starting to feel therapeutic so I can’t wait to go back and tackle these projects.

What I'm Wearing Wednesday: Linen Off The Shoulder Dress

Hello Lovely,

I'm back from a much needed 3 week vacation! I kept you guys up to date on my Instagram and Twitter and even managed to post a few times while I was away. I updated you on why I needed to get away, shared the 10 things I love about my LDR (long distance relationship), gave away a free countdown calendar for people in LDRs, and even started a diary for self-reflection on my relationship of nearly two years! And how could we forget that AMAZING money-saving tutorial on how to make your own Febreeze at home! So yeah, I've been busy! Between taking time out for spiritual reflection and creating lesson plans for the upcoming school year, I really wanted to maintain communication with you guys!

One of the things I couldn't wait to share with you was this dress! I made it before my trip with my linen fabric that kind of looks like denim. We've had the fabric for years and just never used it. But with the off the shoulder trend sweeping the summer, I had to get in on the action! I wore it to dinner at TGIF with my boyfriend and his sisters.  The dress was definitely boyfriend approved!

Enjoy the rest of your week guys!

What I'm Wearing Wednesday: Sleeveless Bodycon Dress

Hello Lovely,

I'm back again with another dress I made. This time I'm really proud of myself for finally making a bodycon dress! I could never seem to get the right fit whenever I make a "fitted" dress and I usually settle for something too big as opposed to it being too small. But this time I finally got just the right fit!

I've been having so much fun sewing new outfits for myself this summer! I challenged myself to sew something new every week and so far I've kept up with it!

Normally, I trim off the edge, like if there is a white edge or the copyright printing. But this time, I kept the white edge because I thought it would look great to have a strip of white going down the middle.

While it didn't quite go straight down the middle, I was close enough that it wasn't obvious. I wore this dress to church on Independence Day. Even though our flag doesn't have white or green in it, I thought the aqua and black were patriotic enough with a little colour deviation to not be so overboard patriotic, you know?

This dress is so fun and flirty, and the colours are so bright and cheerful! There's a small piece leftover that I plan on using for a baby's outfit. You'll just have to wait to see how that turns out!

So what do you think? Do you think I nailed the bodycon look? What's your favourite style of dress?

What I'm Wearing Wednesdays: Summer Coral Shirt Dress

Hello Lovely,

Summer is so perfect for sewing projects because I tend to go out more with friends and travel more, which means, I'll need clothes to wear. Now I could shop like everyone else, but I like a challenge and even more, I love having my handiwork admired by others!

My latest project didn't quite turn out the way I wanted to, but I plan on going back over it to make it perfect!

But until then, I wore it to my aunt's church this past Sunday and no one even knew how uncomfortable I felt with my imperfections.

I can't wait to show you my other projects that I'm working on this summer! What kind of DIY projects are you working this summer? I'd love to hear about it in the comment section below! And if you have any suggestions for projects you'd like to see me work on, share that too!
