How I Dress According to My Mood

Hello Lovely,

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been the person who wears her emotions on her sleeve (sometimes literally). This became even more evident when I discovered wearapy and wanted to make it a real (recognised) form of therapy. Some of you are probably wondering what the hell I’m talking about. A few years ago, Jeannie Mai started using the term “wearapy” to define her psychology of style. Wearapy describes how you can manipulate your mood from the outside-in through style.

In fact, colour and emotion can often be intertwined. For instance, red is a colour of stimulation while blue can have a calming effect. Just like you might tend to grab a pair of black sweatpants when you’re under the weather, wearing a favourite colour can have the reverse effect and uplift your spirits when you need it the most.

Sometimes, even if we don’t feel like it, we need to dress rational, stylish, or sensibly. But if I’m trying to improve my mood, this is what I do to avoid wearing black from top to bottom.

HAPPY

When I’m happy, I don’t necessarily dress in bold colours. Instead I choose comfortable, yet flattering clothes, that still make a bold statement. I’ll take a few risks with my outfits but for the most part, I still play it safe.

CONFIDENT

Feeling confident in a professional setting is a bit harder to gauge. When I’m feeling powerful, it shows in my colour choices. I go for bold pairings, sometimes mixing prints. When I’m feeling confident, I’m in love with my outfit and deep down, I feel like everyone else is too. I take more photos of these outfits because I feel proud of the look.

TIRED

We all feel tired, exhausted, especially in this modern world. Usually, when I feel like this, I go for comfort and accessibility. Because when I’m tired, it’s important that I don’t try to think about it too much.

My Favourite New Clothing Pieces + The Fall Colour I Can't Stop Wearing

Hello Lovely,

It's hard not to over-state how exciting it is to add new pieces to my wardrobe. I love having options and I love getting compliments on new pieces so I can say, “Thanks, it was only $6”! I'm not someone who's governed by trends, but that’s not to say that there aren't a few styles that come with each season that I get excited to embrace. This year I’m obsessed with Burgundy. There’s something about the colour that I can’t resist and this year, I may have overdosed on it. Check it out!

But that’s not the only colour I’m loving. I’m also loving a rusty orange, which you’ll see in these pieces. I wore the trousers to work and everyone loved them! I also own a pair of orange trousers that were really comfortable and nice for work. I haven’t worn the jacket yet, but I’ll definitely share a photo when I do.

I am really excited about these new pieces. I love how versatile they are. I can wear them with a lot of different colours, and a lot of the pieces easily transition outside of the office. I’m going to have fun mixing and matching, or some days just keeping it monochrome. What are you wearing this Fall? Share your obsessions in the comment section below and let’s chat!

Summer Vacay Style by Zaful

Hello Lovely,

I have big news for you! I recently became an affiliate of the online shop Zaful. You can get great coupons at the end of this post to help you save some money on your next order. Of course the site always has sales which you can't miss. I worked with Zaful before and thanks to them I got really beautiful clothing pieces in my closet. I can't wait to order some new items from Zaful because the clothing is so unique and gorgeous. I'm going to break down each piece: how well it fit, fabric quality and wow factor!

Before my vacation this summer, I was counting down the days until I jetted off! I don't know about you, but a part of my trip planning always includes finding new clothes to wear while on vacation. For my London trip, I waited until I got there because I was really excited to go to stores like Primark, Next and Top Shop. But for this trip, I ordered my clothes in advance and picked them up from my aunt when I got there.

In my order, I couldn't decide between two dresses so I ordered both of them but only one (the orange halter dress) fit, so I gave the other one (a black and white slip dress) to my cousin. I wore the orange halter dress in Puerto Rico and I felt like a movie star walking through Old San Juan (even though I can't wear a bra with it). I wore the two piece suit in St. Thomas, but I wasn't able to get a good photo of it until a wine tasting earlier this month. I was really happy to wear my yellow two piece outfit in Houston, but with the heat, I sweat so much, it wasn't a pretty sight after awhile. The fabric wrinkles very easily and is not breathable at all, so I've only wore the halter top since (again I can't wear a bra with this, but I'm not complaining). I wanted to wear my sexy black swimsuit in Houston but we never found time to go to the pool so I wore it at a sorority pool party when I got back home. It's really not flattering on anyone with breasts bigger than a B cup and you will have nipple slippage so invest in nipple covers if you get this.

And don't get me started on how chic the accessories are! Of course I've included photos of me in the outfits to show how they would fit. Just so you know, I ordered a Large in everything because I was afraid it would run small and I have pretty big boobs for my frame. The top on the first dress, definitely could've been bigger, but at least I didn't have any malfunctions. Out of all the clothing pieces, it was definitely my favourite because I love the way it moves, it's totally breathable and I just felt gorgeous in it!

3 Ways to Wear a Pencil Skirt This Fall

Hello Lovely,

Lately I've been having fun challenging myself to commit to certain colours or themes for the week. Last week we enjoyed cooler weather with a cold front so I was happy to wear longer sleeves and sweaters. I love cold weather because for me it's easier to get warm than it is for me to cool off in hot weather. But let's be honest, Fall and Winter fashion can quickly become frumpy and unappealing. While we hardly get a chance to wear sweaters because it's always so hot, I was determined to prove that Fall fashion can be both functional and fun. So here's 3 ways to wear a pencil skirt this fall:

With a printed top

DSC_0347.jpg

Because it's Fall I didn't want to go too wild and crazy with the print. I kept it neutral by pairing a blush midi pencil skirt with a black and white striped top. By keeping my heels and sweater neutral as well, nothing was too fussy, leaving everything clean and streamlined.

Then again, there's nothing wrong brightening things up a bit. Using a tribal print pencil skirt as my base, I was able to pair it with a pumpkin coloured blouse and my new favourite coat (only $9 by the way). I accessorised with a colourful piece of African jewellery for fun.

With a cool pair of flats

When my kids asked me, "What are those?" I had to explain to them that they are called Oxfords and I bought them in London where a lot of people wear them. I was going for a relaxed look with this one, pairing it with my new striped blouse (a steal at only $5). Seriously guys, fashion does not have to be expensive!

So what do you think about my pairings? I can't wait to share more ways to wear every day items to provide inspiration if you're ever stuck. Has this post motivated you to switch up your look? Share your reactions in the comment section below.

What I'm Wearing Wednesday: Linen Off The Shoulder Dress

Hello Lovely,

I'm back from a much needed 3 week vacation! I kept you guys up to date on my Instagram and Twitter and even managed to post a few times while I was away. I updated you on why I needed to get away, shared the 10 things I love about my LDR (long distance relationship), gave away a free countdown calendar for people in LDRs, and even started a diary for self-reflection on my relationship of nearly two years! And how could we forget that AMAZING money-saving tutorial on how to make your own Febreeze at home! So yeah, I've been busy! Between taking time out for spiritual reflection and creating lesson plans for the upcoming school year, I really wanted to maintain communication with you guys!

One of the things I couldn't wait to share with you was this dress! I made it before my trip with my linen fabric that kind of looks like denim. We've had the fabric for years and just never used it. But with the off the shoulder trend sweeping the summer, I had to get in on the action! I wore it to dinner at TGIF with my boyfriend and his sisters.  The dress was definitely boyfriend approved!

Enjoy the rest of your week guys!

What I'm Wearing Wednesday: Sleeveless Bodycon Dress

Hello Lovely,

I'm back again with another dress I made. This time I'm really proud of myself for finally making a bodycon dress! I could never seem to get the right fit whenever I make a "fitted" dress and I usually settle for something too big as opposed to it being too small. But this time I finally got just the right fit!

I've been having so much fun sewing new outfits for myself this summer! I challenged myself to sew something new every week and so far I've kept up with it!

Normally, I trim off the edge, like if there is a white edge or the copyright printing. But this time, I kept the white edge because I thought it would look great to have a strip of white going down the middle.

While it didn't quite go straight down the middle, I was close enough that it wasn't obvious. I wore this dress to church on Independence Day. Even though our flag doesn't have white or green in it, I thought the aqua and black were patriotic enough with a little colour deviation to not be so overboard patriotic, you know?

This dress is so fun and flirty, and the colours are so bright and cheerful! There's a small piece leftover that I plan on using for a baby's outfit. You'll just have to wait to see how that turns out!

So what do you think? Do you think I nailed the bodycon look? What's your favourite style of dress?

DIY Black Crop Top Without a Pattern

Woohoo! This is my first sewing project of the year! Actually, it's my first sewing project in months. I'd count the stockings I did for our Christmas place settings but you guys never got the tutorial for that. (I'll share it next Christmas. Only 348 days to go!)

Last week, I was feeling a little down, so I did a little binge shopping. And that binge shopping reminded me that I don't have a decent black crop top. The one that I do have is spaghetti strap and fits more like a bra than a blouse. So last week Friday when I got home, I got out some leftover linen-like black fabric that I had in storage and my favourite crop top.

I can't stress out easy this tutorial is. This is roughly a 30 minute project. So turn off your phones and TV and buckle down with this quick and easy project to create your own trendy piece of fashion!

Notes:

Choose a shirt that is loose fitting. If not, remember to add a few extra inches when cutting so you won't need to add a zipper or buttons. Once you lay your shirt over the fabric, all you have to do is cut around it. Place the fold of the blouse on the fold of the fabric. Remember to cut the front (the two folds together will be the front of the blouse) lower the back)

Cut on the dotted line. When you're done, literally flip the blouse horizontally to the other side of fabric (with the fold of the blouse facing the open edges of the fabric). You'll end up with this:

This time sew on the dotted lines. Make sure the right sides are facing each other. When it comes to sewing the back, pinch the seams together and sew that.

Hem the bottom and the neckline and armholes and you're done! I wore it last night when I went for sushi with my best friend!

Can you believe we've best friends for the past 12 years?

Hopefully this is the start of more sewing projects. I'll keep you guys updated.

XoX,

Olivia
